Schertz electrical-permit rules changed Sept. 1: applications filed that day or later for non-exempt electrical work must comply with the 2026 National Electrical Code.
Homeowners, contractors and businesses filing applications with non-exempt electrical work on or after Sept. 1 must design and install that work under the 2026 code.
The city’s notice places the rule within Schertz’s corporate limits. It makes the permit-application date the dividing line for covered work, rather than the date construction begins or the electrical work is installed.
That makes Sept. 1 the practical checkpoint for applicants: a covered application submitted before the effective date and one submitted on or after it fall on opposite sides of the city’s stated transition.
